When Is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?

Season-by-season and month-by-month guidance for safari, Kilimanjaro, and the coast.

Tanzania is a year-round destination.

There is no single “best” time to visit Tanzania; the right time depends entirely on what you want to experience. The famous dry season (June–October) offers the easiest wildlife viewing and the dramatic Mara River crossings of the Great Migration. The green season (November–May) rewards you with lush landscapes, newborn wildlife, excellent birding, fewer vehicles, and lower rates.

Wildlife is present in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro all year; only the migration herds move with the rains. Below we break down each season, then match the best months to specific interests, so you can choose the perfect window for your trip.

The Four Seasons at a Glance

June – October · Dry Season (Peak)

The most popular period. Vegetation thins, water sources shrink and animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes, making game viewing superb. The Great Migration typically reaches the northern Serengeti, with Mara River crossings between roughly July and October. Days are warm and sunny; mornings can be cold on game drives. Book well in advance.

November – December · Short Rains

Brief afternoon showers turn the plains green and migrant birds arrive. Crowds thin out and the herds move south toward the calving grounds. A beautiful, photogenic time with good value and excellent resident wildlife viewing.

January – March · Calving Season

On the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few weeks. The concentration of newborns draws intense predator action, prime for photographers. Generally warm with occasional showers.

April – May · Green Season

The wettest months bring lush scenery, dramatic skies and the lowest visitor numbers and rates. Some camps close and a few roads get muddy, but the landscape is stunning and the experience feels wonderfully exclusive.

Best Time by Interest

Migration River Crossings

July – October. The best window to witness wildebeest braving the crocodile-filled Mara River in the northern Serengeti.

Calving & Predator Action

January – March. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu come alive with newborns and the predators that follow them.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Jan – mid-Mar & Jun – Oct. The driest, clearest windows for the trek, with better trail conditions and summit views.

Zanzibar & The Coast

Jun – Oct & Dec – Feb. Sunny, drier beach weather. Avoid the heaviest rains of April–May for beach time.

Birding

November – April. Migratory species are present and many resident birds are in breeding plumage.

Value & Exclusivity

April, May & November. Lower rates, quiet parks, and lush scenery for travellers who don’t mind some rain.

Following the Great Migration

The migration is a continuous, year-round loop of around two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle through the Serengeti ecosystem. Roughly: calving on the southern plains (Dec–Mar), movement northwest through the central and western corridor (Apr–Jun), Mara River crossings in the north (Jul–Oct), then back south as the short rains begin.

Because the herds follow the rains, exact timing varies year to year. We position your safari in the right region for your travel dates, so you’re where the action is most likely to be.
