4 Days Mahale Adventure

Your journey begins with a domestic flight from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma Airport, located on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. Upon arrival in Kigoma, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide. From Kigoma, you will begin your journey to Mahale Mountains National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and spectacular parks, known for its chimpanzee population and lush forested mountains.
Reaching Mahale is a scenic and adventurous trip. From Kigoma, you'll travel approximately 130 km (about 4–5 hours) by road and boat. First, you will drive around 40 km (1 hour) to Kagunga village or another jetty point, where you will board a boat for the remaining leg of the journey. The boat ride along Lake Tanganyika can take between 3–4 hours, depending on weather and type of boat (speedboat or dhow). The lake journey offers stunning views of the Mahale Mountains as they rise dramatically from the shoreline.
You will arrive at your lodge inside Mahale Mountains National Park in the late afternoon. After check-in, enjoy some time to relax and soak in the remote beauty of the surroundings. Dinner and overnight will be at your comfortable lodge nestled within the park.

After breakfast, you’ll spend a full day exploring Mahale Mountains National Park, one of the few places in the world where you can track wild chimpanzees on foot. With a knowledgeable park guide, you’ll set out into the forest to locate the resident chimpanzee community. Trekking times vary depending on the location of the chimps, but you may hike anywhere from 1 to 4 hours each way. The experience of observing chimpanzees in their natural habitat—playing, grooming, and feeding—is unforgettable.
Besides chimpanzee tracking, Mahale also offers rich birdlife, waterfalls, and opportunities to swim or relax along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. After a picnic lunch or return to the lodge, your afternoon can be spent enjoying the lake, kayaking, or simply soaking up the tranquil environment.
All meals are included today—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and your overnight stay will be at the lodge within the park.

This morning, enjoy a half-day activity in the park. You may choose a shorter chimpanzee trek, a forest walks to spot birds and butterflies, or time at leisure by the lake. After your final experience in Mahale, you will begin the journey back to Kigoma.
The return trip to Kigoma will again combine a boat ride (3–4 hours) along Lake Tanganyika, followed by a road transfer (about 1 hour) to the town. You’ll arrive in Kigoma by late afternoon or early evening, just in time to freshen up before dinner.
Dinner and overnight will be at a comfortable hotel in Kigoma town, allowing you to rest before your departure the next day

After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to Kigoma Airport, which is approximately 10–15 minutes’ drive from the town center, depending on your hotel location. From there, catch your scheduled flight back to Dar es Salaam, marking the end of your incredible Mahale safari experience.
